You know what I hate? I hate the word ‘work‘. The word suggests arduous, joyless, slavish activity. Oxen ‘work’. Cars ‘work’. Computers ‘work’. People CREATE.
We are ‘creators’. What we do is ‘create’. Janitors and Maids create clean environments. Moms and Dads (endeavor to) create happy family environments. Children (endeavor to) create good grades in school. Free apps found all over the place are ‘created’. YOU ‘create’ what? How much happier would we all be if we would just change that one little word?
If the approach in teaching is to enhance the ability of the student to ‘create’, how much more willing to engage would student AND teacher be? ‘Bringing new ideas to the fore’ can be challenging. When students understand that what was ‘brought about’ before can help them to create or ‘bring about’ even greater things to life, THEN stuff gets interesting!
I say now that we drop that word ‘work’. (OK, you can keep it if it makes you feel good. If nothing else, I am a benevolent Ruler.) Let’s CREATE away! Instead of “I’m going to work.” It’s “I’m going to CREATE!” Doesn’t that just feel better?
What are YOU creating?
